Does HVTA undertake training and assessment in both NSW and ACT?

Yes, HVTA can provide training and assessment for both ACT and NSW licences and we also service the South Coast!!

What licence classes can HVTA train and assess in?

HVTA can assess Light Rigid (LR), Medium Rigid (MR), Heavy Rigid (HR) and Heavy Combination (HC).    HVTA can provide both training in synchromesh and non-synchromesh gearboxes.

What happens if I cannot demonstrate the skills required?

First and forth-most we are a heavy vehicle driver training school.  HVTA has the skills and experience to train you to the required level to obtain your heavy vehicle licence.  Prior to commencing the first lesson HVTA will provide you the opportunity to drive the vehicle.  At this time HVTA will provide you with a fixed quote in order to obtain your licence based upon your demonstrated skill level.

Should you feel uncomfortable in this vehicle, or wish to train for a different licence class, HVTA can complete the session with you in the appropriate vehicle.

Can I use my own vehicle?

Yes, you may be trained and assessed in your own vehicle.  The vehicle must be roadworthy prior to conducting any training or assessment.

How long does it take?

The length of time it takes to train new driver depends on the trainee’s experience and driving ability.  For NSW trainees, the NSW RMS stipulates that LR and MR trainees complete a minimum prescribed assessment time of 5 hours or 6 hours for HR and HC trainees.

ACT trainees must successfully demonstrate their driving ability in accordance with the ACT RTA Heavy Vehicle Assessment Standards.

HVTA must provide a minimum of 48 hours’ notice to the RTA prior to conducting an assessment.  To ensure HVTA can complete your training and assessment without delay please contact us to discuss the most suitable training package for your experience.

How much does it cost?

HVTA offers a variety of competitively priced training packages.  Trainees may choose the package which most meets their needs and budget.  HVTA can tailor training packages around your requirements.

Discounts applies for corporate groups, transport companies and emergency services personnel.

Additionally you can reduce the cost of training by supplying the vehicle yourself.

When do I need to pay?

All lessons are required to be paid if full upon booking.

How do I pay?

You may make your payment by credit card, EFT or cash.  All EFT and cash payments must be received before the training date is confirmed.  Cash payments are made directly into a bank account.  Please contact our office to discuss cash payments.

What about if I need to cancel?

We understand things change.  HVTA will refund for cancellations where more than 7 days notice has been provided, less administration fee of $50.  If less than 7 days notice is provided HVTA will only provide you with a credit for your training session, no refund will be provided.

We are located on a rural property in Gungahlin, ACT.  Before you commence your training HVTA will forward joining instructions to you with all the information you need to know.

Do I need any special equipment?

No.  To ensure we can deliver your training in accordance with our OHS requirements, HVTA requires you to bring:

  • Wear enclosed shoes, suitable for driving
  • Suitable clothing for driving a heavy vehicle, which may get dirty

HVTA will provide you with a safety vest on the day
